In 1914, as World War I's fury was erupting in Europe, two young men in Tacoma, Washington incorporated their wholesale candy business which manufactured fine confections destined to be known and loved throughout the world. After experimenting with everything from taffy chews to butterscotch balls, Harry Brown developed a recipe for a crunchy, log-shaped candy with a buttercrunch center and a coat of chocolate and diced almonds. His partner, J.C. Haley, knew immediately that the company had a hit. Thus was born one of the world's great confections: ALMOND ROCA® Buttercrunch.

From the beginning Brown & Haley also manufactured a quality line of boxed chocolates, but they wondered why it was not possible for an American candy company to manufacture boxed chocolates that are comparable to yet less expensive than European chocolates. Through the development of a patented production process, Brown & Haley introduced Belgian Cremes® and Selections®. These European-style chocolates have often been selected as the 'chocolate of choice' in independent taste tests conducted across the United States.

The company is still family-owned and headed by third-generation, candy manufacturer, Mark T. Haley, who assumed the presidency in 1984 from his father, Fred, who had succeeded his father, J.C. Haley, in 1954. Fred Haley, who was born the same year Harry Brown and J.C. Haley teamed up, still maintains the role of Chairman Emeritus. Tradition at Brown & Haley is almost as important as the company's commitment to using only pure, all natural flavors.
